A guide to the principal websites, common terms, and acronyms used in senior missionary service.

Missionary-Related Websites

Four primary websites are involved in the process of becoming a Senior Missionary or Senior Service Missionary: SMW, LCR, MRS, and SMMS. Another helpful site is the Church Directory of Organizations and Leaders (CDOL). Unofficial pages have also been created to supplement those resources.

Official Websites
SMW Members Senior Missionary Website. Members can explore missionary opportunities. Full-time senior missionaries can search for assignments throughout the world based on skills, interests, and financial resources. Part-time, live-at-home senior service missionaries can search for virtual or local opportunities with Church operations.
LCR Bishops, Stake Presidents, and approved delegates Leader and Clerk Resources. Bishops, Stake Presidents, and approved delegates use LCR to begin and review the recommendation process for full-time missionaries. Bishops and Stake Presidents use it to record their approval after worthiness interviews.
MRS Applicants, Bishops, and Stake Presidents Missionary Recommendation System. Missionary applicants use MRS to begin the recommendation process for Senior Service Missionaries. Bishops and Stake Presidents use it to record their approval after worthiness interviews.
SMMS Operation Managers and Stake Presidents Service Missionary Management System. For Senior Service Missionaries, SMMS is used by the Operation Manager and Stake President to approve a proposed assignment and to monitor or modify the assignment and release.

Common Terms and Acronyms

Terms and acronyms used for mission callings and related processes are distinctive and have changed over time. Some are similar and are easily confused.

Term or Acronym Definition
Modification An extension or early release.
Operation The organization for which missionary service is performed, such as a bishops’ storehouse, FamilySearch center, mission office, Family Services office, or temple.
Operation Manager (OM) The manager of the organization for which service is performed, such as a bishops’ storehouse manager, FamilySearch center director, mission president, Family Services agency manager, or temple recorder.
Opportunity A position or assignment. Each opportunity has its own position number.
SM Senior Missionary—full-time, serving away from home or from home.
SMC Senior Missionary Coordinator.
SSM Senior Service Missionary—serving while living at home.
YSM Young Service Missionary—serving while living at home.
